President Thomas S. Monson: “Many more people could ride out the storm-tossed waves in their economic lives if they had their year’s supply of food and clothing and were debt-free. Today we find that many have followed this counsel in reverse: they have at least a year’s supply of debt and are food-free” (“That Noble Gift—Love at Home,” Church News, May 12, 2001, 7).
President Gordon B. Hinckley: “The best place to have some food set aside is within our homes. … We can begin ever so modestly. We can begin with a one week’s food supply and gradually build it to a month, and then to three months. … I fear that so many feel that a long-term food supply is so far beyond their reach that they make no effort at all. Begin in a small way, … and gradually build toward a reasonable objective” (“To Men of the Priesthood,” Ensign, Nov. 2002, 58).
Our
Stake’s Preparedness Plan provides the resources necessary to
empower every member in the Stake to be completely prepared, in
accordance with prophetic counsel, within 2 years or as the Spirit
directs. This plan covers the following three areas:
Food Storage Acquire a 3-month supply of non-perishable
foods you eat on a regular basis, a 1-year supply of long-term food
storage, and 2 weeks' worth of water supply.
Emergency Preparedness Complete emergency kits and
develop household evacuation and communication plans.
Financial Preparedness Develop a concrete plan to live
within one's means, get out of debt and save for the future.
The resources provided in this
preparedness plan will give you month by month instruction to help
you reach these goals. This plan helps Stake members to live in
complete obedience to the words of our modern prophets. You
may or may not feel the burden of financial strain; you may
never have a 72-hr emergency; your food storage may outlive you, yet
what matters is obedience. While we may consider only the
temporal benefits of self-sufficiency and preparedness, "All
things unto me are spiritual and not at any time have I given you a
law which was temporal" (D&C 29:34). The Lord will
bless us as we abide by the laws that allow Him to do so.
"When we obtain any blessing from God it is by obedience to that
law upon which it is predicated" (D&C 130:21).
Obedience and sacrifice bring forth the blessings of heaven, build
character, rescue all that is finest within and cultivate the latent
richness of the Spirit (Special meeting of Stake Presidents, Oct. 2,
1936).
Simply providing our “heart and a
willing mind” (D&C 64:34) allows the Lord to use our "small
and simple” attempts to bring to pass great things (Alma 37:6).
Faith and obedience will move mountains, whether mountains of debt or
doubt, food or fear, cash or complacency. Indeed, “the Lord
is able to do all things according to his will, for the children of
men, if it so be that they exercise faith in him. Wherefore,
let us be faithful to him” (1 Nephi 7:12). We invite
each member of the Stake to prayerfully, consistently, and diligently
pursue the ways the Lord would have them prepare, thus qualifying
them for all the blessings that come from self-reliance and
preparedness. We hope that this plan will help all of us keep
the commandments of God in this area so that as we do so, "he
[will] nourish [us], and strengthen [us], and provide means whereby
[we] can accomplish the thing which he has commanded" (1 Nephi
17:3).
